We start with a data visualization that compares the number of female executives in public companies (divided up by sector) to the number of female executives in the roughly 700 private equity firms followed by BoardEx. This analysis includes top C-Suite roles and, in the case of public companies, executive board members.

The results were staggering — automobiles were the only sector in which there were fewer women in leadership roles than private equity, at 9% and 10% respectively. Comparatively, more than 20% of top leadership roles are held by women in the media, retail, pharmaceutical, utilities and financial services industries.

Some of the sectors with more female leaders than private equity include tobacco, construction, oil and transportation.
